Arenas Avoids Jail Time, Get Probation

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to two years of supervised probation Friday for bringing guns into his team’s locker room.
He also is to serve 30 days in a halfway house. He will be required to serve 400 hours of community service and contribute $5,000 to a fund for victims of violence.
Arenas, a suspended point guard for the Washington Wizards, pleaded guilty on January 15 to illegally bringing four guns into the team’s locker room during an ongoing dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton. Prosecutors said Arenas tried to persuade Crittenton to cover up their confrontation.
Arenas’ lawyers were seeking probation. They called the NBA player a good role model, and said he’s already been punished severely through public scorn and loss of income.
Arenas could have received a sentence ranging from probation to five years in prison.
