As a part of the Capital Improvement Program, Metro has plans to introduce an Open Payment fare system next year, allowing riders to pay for Metrorail, Metrobus, and parking using credit cards, mobile wallets, or smartwatches instead of SmarTrip cards.

This initiative provides customers with more options for contactless payment making the transaction process faster and more reliable. Metro has made previous environmental changes by using solar powered pay stations so the upgrades continue as this new pay option rollout begins with Metrorail in May 2025. Then in summer of 2025, this option will be added to Metrobuses followed by parking facilities in late fall 2025. Many riders and staff express their excitemnt for the new system’s potential to simplify while also speeding up the fare payment process.
