Howard University men’s basketball coach Kenny Blakeney has put forth an ambitious plan to propel the Bison program into a new era of prominence. Recently detailed to Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post, Blakeney’s proposal centers on securing a $100 million investment through private equity. Inspired by the success of Deion Sanders at Jackson State, Blakeney aims to elevate Howard’s profile and ensure long-term success by selling a 33 1/3 percent stake in the program to private equity firms and wealthy individuals.

The strategy is designed to inject significant capital into Howard’s basketball program, with funds earmarked for facility upgrades, establishment of Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) deals for players, and enhancing the program’s appeal to other conferences. As a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), which includes Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Howard faces challenges amid conference realignment. Blakeney’s vision seeks to make the Bison a more attractive option and potentially position them for inclusion in conferences with higher TV rights revenue.

While Howard recently secured a 20-year deal with The Jordan Brand in 2022 to boost its athletics profile, Blakeney argues that additional funding streams are essential for sustained growth. His proposal underscores the importance of strategic investments to not only enhance athletic facilities and resources but also to ensure Howard’s competitiveness in collegiate athletics.
