Pres. Biden To Survey Hurricane Helene Damage In The Carolinas
President Joe Biden is expected to survey the damage in the Carolinas on Wednesday (Oct. 2) as cleanup and recovery continues in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
As reported by ABC11, the storm caused catastrophic damage across the Southeast, killing at least 166. Many residents in the Carolinas are still without running water, cellular service, and electricity.
“We have to jump-start this recovery process,” Biden said Tuesday, estimating it will cost billions. “People are scared to death. This is urgent.”
While President Biden is in the Carolinas, Vice President Kamala Harris will visit neighboring Georgia.
Helene has been described as one of the deadliest storms in recent U.S. history as it knocked out power and cell phone service for millions. As of Wednesday, more than 1.2 million customers were without power in the Carolinas and Georgia.
More than 150,000 households have registered with FEMA for assistance, and agency representative Frank Matranga expects that number to rise quickly in the coming days. He said nearly 2 million ready-to-eat meals and more than a million liters of water have already been sent to the hardest-hit areas.
