Alsobrooks, who defeated former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan last month, will fill the Senate seat vacated by retiring Sen. Ben Cardin. In her farewell, she thanked residents for their trust and reflected on her tenure: “Serving the residents of this county has been the honor of my lifetime, and I am deeply proud of all we have accomplished together.”

With two years left in her term as county executive, Alsobrooks’ departure triggers a special election to select her permanent successor. While a date for the election has not yet been set, the Prince George’s County charter mandates that the chief administrative officer step in as acting county executive.
