Automated Train Operations Debut A Success, Say WMATA and Red Line Riders

For the first time since 2009, Metro’s Red Line reintroduced Automated Train Operations (ATO). A Metro spokesperson called the first day a success, despite minor station overruns that didn’t affect service.

ATO, comparable to autopilot in airplanes, is designed to optimize energy use, improve on-time performance, and provide a smoother ride, according to WMATA. Riders shared mixed reactions: some noticed a smoother and faster experience, while others remained skeptical about the change.

Metro had suspended ATO following the 2009 Red Line crash that killed nine people. Although initially blamed on ATO, the National Transportation Safety Board later determined a faulty track circuit was responsible for the deadly accident.
