The Washington Commanders will reportedly back linebacker Bobby Wagner on a one-year deal worth up to $9.5 million. The re-signing, first reported by NFL Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, is a move that could solidify Washington’s defense in the upcoming season. Wagner, a seasoned veteran and one of the most accomplished linebackers in the NFL, is expected to bring leadership, experience, and a fearsome presence to the heart of the team’s defense.
With a resume that includes eight Pro Bowl selections, six First-Team All-Pro honors, and a Super Bowl title, the 33-year-old continues to be one of the most reliable and productive linebackers in the league. Even last season, Wagner proved he still has plenty left in the tank, racking up over 100 tackles and demonstrating his knack for being around the ball on every down.
For the Commanders, Wagner’s return fills a significant gap in their defense. While the team has focused on developing young talent, bringing in a proven leader like Wagner provides immediate benefits. Not only will he help anchor the Commanders’ run defense, but his ability to read offenses and call plays from the middle could elevate the overall performance of the unit. His presence alone is expected to boost morale and provide guidance for the younger members of the defense.
Heading into the upcoming season, Washington is looking to stay competitive in a tough NFC East, and moves like this prove they’re serious about contending. Bringing back a veteran of Wagner’s caliber could be the key to unlocking their full defensive potential.
